Why Smart Thermostats Are Worth It

Smart thermostats like the Google Nest, Hive, tado, and Honeywell Evohome have become hugely popular - and for good reason. They let you control your heating from your phone, learn your schedule, and can cut your energy bills by 10-20%.

But installing one isn't always as simple as swapping the old thermostat for a new one.

Can I Install a Smart Thermostat Myself?

It depends on your existing heating system. If you have a modern combi boiler with simple two-wire thermostat connections, some smart thermostats are genuinely DIY-friendly.

However, most homes in Thanet have older heating systems - S-plan or Y-plan setups with separate heating and hot water circuits, motorised zone valves, and wiring centres. These systems need specific wiring modifications to work with a smart thermostat.

Getting the wiring wrong can mean:

  • The boiler fires continuously (no interlock)
  • Hot water doesn't work
  • Heating and hot water can't be controlled independently
  • The smart thermostat doesn't get enough power (no neutral wire)

What's Involved in a Professional Installation?

When we install a smart thermostat, we:

  1. Check your existing system - identify whether it's S-plan, Y-plan, combi, or something else
  2. Assess compatibility - not every smart thermostat works with every system
  3. Modify the wiring - connect the thermostat to your existing wiring centre, ensuring proper boiler interlock
  4. Set up the app - get you connected and show you how to use the features
  5. Test everything - verify heating and hot water work independently and correctly

Which Smart Thermostat Should I Choose?

Here's a quick comparison for typical Thanet homes:

Google Nest - Great all-rounder, learning schedule, sleek design. Works well with most systems but needs a Heat Link wired at the boiler end.

Hive - Simple to use, good app, works with Alexa and Google Home. Popular in the UK and well-supported.

tado - Excellent for multi-room control with smart radiator valves. Good if you want room-by-room temperature control.

Honeywell Evohome - The best multi-zone system for larger homes. More complex to install but gives you full control over every zone.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our smart thermostat installation service starts from £160 (labour only), depending on the complexity of your existing wiring. That covers assessment, wiring modifications, installation, setup, and testing.

You can supply your own thermostat, or we can source one for you.
